Local author shares powerful story of overcoming crime, poverty, and prison
From a prison cell to the pulpit, Thapelo Masokoane's powerful journey of redemption inspires young people across Johannesburg. His story proves that no matter how dark the past, there is always a path to purpose.
What began as a life of hardship, crime, and hopelessness has become a powerful story of redemption for Thapelo Masokoane, a former inmate turned author, preacher, and motivational speaker.
Born into poverty and raised in a broken home without a father figure, Masokoane found himself caught in a life shaped by his surroundings. “Poverty and broken homes had a direct impact on my life,” he reflected. In his youth, he became involved in crime, and ultimately, his actions led to his arrest for house robbery, murder, and the possession of an unlicensed firearm.

“When I was sentenced, I thought my life was over. I believed I would never amount to anything. Little did I know that my darkest situation was preparing me for something greater.”
While serving a 15-year sentence, Masokoane experienced a profound transformation. He became the prison librarian, a role that sparked a deep love for reading and learning. “Books liberated me from ignorance. Bob Marley said, ‘Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds.’ That quote shaped my view of life.”

It was also in prison that Masokoane found his faith. “The day you meet God, you meet the better version of yourself. Only Christ was big enough to cleanse my heart and forgive me for all I had done.”
In 2021, he published From Prison to Pulpit, a raw and honest autobiography that reflects on his early struggles, time in prison, and faith journey. “Every situation has a context. And I strongly believe that all of us have a story. Mine fits perfectly with the title.”
Since his release, he has launched a clothing line called Poneginas and begun sharing his story at churches, schools, and community gatherings. But life after prison hasn’t been easy. He continues to face challenges with employment, housing, and funding his vision. “I still have struggles. But I’ve developed the tenacity to endure, knowing that one day the sun will rise, so long as I stay on the right path.”
With big dreams and a burning purpose, Masokoane hopes to start a non-profit or consultancy that will help young people escape the same traps he once fell into. “I want others to know that your story can change, no matter where you start. There’s always hope.”
