Scouts welcome Johannesburg Children’s Home for weekend of fun and friendship

The 1st Sandringham Scout Group has kicked off a weekend of joy for children from the Johannesburg Children’s Home, and the fun is just getting started.

The Sandringham Scout Hall came alive with cheerful chatter and smiling faces as 26 children from the Johannesburg Children’s Home arrived for a weekend packed with fun and games, hosted by the 1st Sandringham Scout Group.

The event, taking place on July 19 and 20, was the first-ever camping experience for the children, who were buzzing with excitement.

“This is the first time they’re actually camping over,” said Richard Hopper, chief Scout of the Sandringham group. “We try to run two events a year with the home. This is our winter one, and we usually do another in December.”

Hopper explained that the weekend has been specially designed to give the children a proper Scouting experience, with age-appropriate activities planned for each group. “We have three age groups: Meerkats, which is five to seven years, Cubs, which is seven to 11 years, and then Scouts, which is 11 to 18 years. We’ve tried to do interactive programmes specifically built for each of their age groups.”

The activities for the weekend are set to include plenty of games and group experiences, with a full programme still to unfold.

Mathapelo Meyatho, who joined the group from the Johannesburg Children’s Home, shared her hopes for the weekend. “I’d like the children to learn and have fun in all the activities that they do.”

With the grounds full of enthusiasm and a weekend of Scouting adventure still ahead, today marks the start of what promises to be a memorable and meaningful experience for everyone involved.
