Viral video captures drag racing row at Relish

A video of a chaotic brawl outside Relish in Parkwood has gone viral, sparking a police investigation and public outcry over illegal drag racing and reckless behaviour.

A weekend night turned violent outside Relish in Parkwood, when an altercation between two groups over a revving car spiralled into a full-blown street brawl, and it was all caught on camera.

The video, which has been widely shared on social media platform X, shows a scuffle breaking out outside the venue, which is located at the Astron service station in Rosebank. Yusuf Abramjee posted the footage online, claiming the incident stemmed from a heated argument about noisy vehicle revving, a common feature of illegal drag racing culture.

Police have since confirmed that a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm has been opened, and investigations are currently underway.

While many assumed the incident fell under the Rosebank area, the Rosebank Management District was quick to clarify that the fight took place just outside their official precinct. In a statement, they acknowledged the circulating footage and voiced their concern over the violent behaviour reportedly linked to unauthorised street racing activities. “The Rosebank Management District does not condone violence, reckless driving, or illegal drag racing. To ensure public safety, Rosebank SAPS and JMPD have increased night-time roadblocks and patrols in and around the district.”

As investigations continue, the incident has reignited debates around public safety, late-night venue management, and the growing issue of illegal street racing on Johannesburg’s roads.

UPDATE:

Viral video fight linked to noise complaint at Relish

A now-viral video showing a fight outside Relish in Parkwood has been linked to a noise dispute involving drag racers, the restaurant confirmed in a statement.

According to Relish, the incident unfolded after management and security politely asked a group to tone down excessive vehicle noise following several complaints. The group allegedly responded with violence, assaulting a staff member who required medical attention.

Relish has handed CCTV footage and witness accounts to authorities and says it remains committed to ensuring a safe and respectful environment for all.
