Literature lovers and loyal readers gathered at Exclusive Book in Rosebank on October 2 to celebrate the launch of The Advocate, the latest novel by South African author, speaker, and social activist Jackie Phamotse.
Set in the rural town of Clanwilliam, The Advocate follows the Coal family, whose rooibos farm teeters on the brink of collapse amid family secrets and the sinister influence of the Fletchers.

Cameron Coal, at the heart of the story, faces impossible choices where love, loyalty, and morality collide. The novel delves into themes of power, corruption, and family legacy, painting a compelling portrait of human complexity in contemporary South Africa.
“The story began with my family’s love for rooibos tea,” Phamotse explained. “It inspired a story about heritage, justice, and the consequences of human actions.” Her criminology studies inform her writing, giving depth to the novel’s exploration of morality, justice, and intricate character development.

Born in Soweto in 1988, she overcame personal challenges to build a career blending storytelling, social activism, and entrepreneurship.
Her previous works, including the acclaimed BARE series, confront social issues such as human trafficking and exploitation, reflecting her commitment to raising awareness through literature.
