Young warriors shine at Wanderers Karate Club Championships
Courage, skill, and spirit filled the mats at Wanderers Karate Club as young competitors gave their all at this year’s club championships.
The Wanderers Karate Club was alive with energy and anticipation on November 5 as students from across the age groups stepped onto the mats for the club’s annual championship. The atmosphere was a blend of nerves and excitement as young karatekas showcased their skill, determination, and discipline in pursuit of this year’s titles.
From the first bout, it was clear that the event was more than a competition. It was a celebration of growth, teamwork, and perseverance. Many of the youngest participants competed for the very first time, earning applause for their courage and composure.

“There were quite a few moments that stood out,” said sensei Zander La Grange of Wanderers Karate. “It was especially rewarding to see some of our younger students competing for the first time and performing with such courage and composure. A few competitors who have struggled with confidence in the past showed tremendous improvement and heart on the mat.”
The event ran smoothly thanks to the club’s dedicated instructors and volunteers. “We faced the usual logistical hurdles like balancing parent seating and maintaining order between events,” La Grange added, “but clear communication and a disciplined team helped everything come together successfully.”

As the final medals were awarded, pride filled the room. For the students, the day was both a test of skill and a lesson in resilience. For the instructors, it was an opportunity to witness the progress that comes from months of hard training.
Looking ahead, the club has big plans for the coming year. “We plan to build on this momentum by analysing performances and identifying key areas of improvement for each age group,” La Grange said. “Our focus will be on refining technique, sharpening timing, and building mental toughness.”
He also shared details of two major upcoming events: the Gauteng Provincial Tournament on March 20 and 21, 2026, and the National Tournament on May 15 and 16, 2026, both set to take place at the Ellis Park Indoor Arena.
For Wanderers Karate Club, the championship was more than a competition. It was a reminder of the spirit of karate itself – discipline, respect, and the constant pursuit of improvement.
