Afrika Tikkun challenged societal disability stereotypes at their Disability Awareness Month event

Afrika Tikkun observed Disability Awareness Month and celebrated the inclusion of persons with disabilities.

In recognition of Disability Awareness Month, Afrika Tikkun’s Uthando Centre in Braamfontein hosted an event on October 16 to uplift and empower young people living with disabilities.

The centre’s marketing coordinator, Edzisani Luvhengo, explained, “The event’s purpose was to celebrate the creativity, talent and inclusion of persons with disabilities within the performing arts industry, both on and off screen.

It also aimed to broaden public awareness while encouraging youth to remain steadfast in pursuing their dreams, regardless of their disabilities.”

Centred around the theme: See the Able, Not the Label, the event challenged societal stereotypes and highlighted the strength, resilience and capability of young people living with disabilities.

It served as a reminder that a disability does not define a person’s potential.

In attendance were influential figures from the media and production industry, whose support added value to the event.

Among the notable guests was Terrence Ngwila, a respected leader in the production space known for championing inclusive storytelling. Representatives from Sunshine Media also graced the event, demonstrating their commitment to supporting community-driven initiatives and youth empowerment.
