New head coach for DP World Lions women’s cricket no stranger to Wanderers Stadium

Sandile Masengemi’s cricket career may have began at grassroot-level, through a mini-cricket initiative, but he has since gone on to play provincially, internationally, and even for the Strikers, now called the DP World Lions, the team he is now coaching.

DP World Lions women’s cricket new head coach Sandile Masengemi aims to take the team to greater heights with his seasoned coaching experience.

Masengemi explained that he was introduced to the sport in primary school through a mini-cricket initiative. “I first played soccer in primary school, because I was passionate about it. One day, while my friends and I were playing soccer, our principal brought in a cricket coach. From that day, we played cricket at school.”

The head coach added that, after playing the sport in primary school, he played in a team categorised under development cricket. “I proceeded to make my way to the provincial team and also played for the Strikers, which are now called the DP World Lions.”

Masengemi’s coaching career began after he returned from England, after playing for a local team there. “That is where I also became an assistant coach, while playing, which is where my passion for coaching began. When I returned to South Africa, I became an assistant coach for an U17 provincial team. I later made my debut to be an U19 assistant coach.”

The head coach said, although he was no stranger to DP World Lions cricket, he had to adapt to coaching a new team.

“I’m trying to find my feet, and establish my own coaching style, considering that I am now coaching women. What hasn’t changed though is working hard, having a positive mindset, and the honesty of how we perform as a team, because I want to grow the team to a different level.”
