North Street in Melrose continues to sink and deteriorate despite Ward 74 councillor, Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku, sounding the alarm about the dangerous street since December last year.
In its most recent response on January 29, Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), through regional operations head Khaya Gqibitole, stated, “Johannesburg Water will issue an order number authorising JRA to commence with the work. The reinstatement process would take approximately three weeks, which includes the excavation and repair of the settled section.”

Kayser-Echeozonjoku and a reporter visited the unsafe site on February 25, where the road was not only filled with sand but also with debris from the sections where Johannesburg Water dug up for repairs.

The ward councillor said, “In December, I raised the issue of the unsafe road, and JRA told me that Johannesburg Water first had to repair the burst pipe. Johannesburg Water has fixed the pipes, but now a sinkhole has started to develop.”
Kayser-Echeozonjoku concluded that the state of the road was not only an eyesore but a hazard to residents and motorists.
The publication has reached out to JRA and will update the article with their response.
