Sinking North Street is being repaired

After two months North Street is finally seeing action, as JRA says there is a possibility that Johannesburg Water’s pipe is still under strain resulting in the sinking road section.

Sunken Northen Street, in Melrose North, is finally seeing repairment.

Two months after Ward 74 councillor Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku sounded the alarm about the danger the road might cause. A reporter, on February 23, visited the site with the councillor, greeted with a worsening street and sinkholes.

JRA regional head of operations Khaya Gqibitole, on February 26, said the entity has engaged Johannesburg Water to excavate the entire collapsed area. “There is a possibility that their water line or pipe is still leaking or under strain resulting in the sinking road section. Once they have excavated, they will then re-align their entire pipeline system.”

Gqibitole added that, thereafter, JRA would undertake proper backfilling and road surface reinstatement.

Kayser-Echeozonjoku alerted the publication, on March 3, that Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) and Johannesburg Water (JW) began repairing the street on March 2. “After calling JRA and JW twice about the state of the road, JRA informed me that both entities have started working on the reinstatement last night.”

The publication sent JRA and JW questions and will update the article with their response.
