Parktown Boys matric learner leads with heart and ambition on the basketball court

For Parktown Boys’ matric learner Kaseba Waseba, basketball began as little more than curiosity among friends.

Today, it has grown into a defining passion that shapes his daily routine, fuels his ambitions and sharpens his leadership on and off the court.

Kaseba recalled stumbling upon the sport while experimenting with different activities alongside friends. At the time, he admitted he did not take basketball seriously and started in a lower age group team simply for fun. However, a friendly debate among friends about who might one day reach first team status sparked something deeper within him.

“We challenged each other to work hard and see if we could make the top team,” he said. “That is when I started falling in love with the game.”

Progress became his greatest motivator. After an entire first season without scoring a single point, Kaseba experienced a breakthrough when he finally saw the ball drop through the net in his second season. At that moment, he said, changed everything and ignited his determination to improve.

Now a first-team player since Grade 10 and a point guard, Kaseba thrives in a role that mirrors his personality. He explained that the position allows him to guide teammates, read the game and ensure the team moves in harmony.

“I like being able to control the flow and help everyone stay on the same page,” he said, emphasising that trust and teamwork are essential. Without it, he believes, teams quickly unravel into frustration and missed opportunities.

One of his proudest moments came during his first school match as point guard, where he led the team with both points and assists in a convincing victory. The performance not only secured the win but also affirmed his confidence in the role.

Beyond school, Kaseba sharpens his skills through club basketball and solo training sessions, often returning to a nearby court for shooting practice before games.

Mentally, he draws inspiration from legends known for a relentless work ethic, while his mother remains his biggest supporter, ensuring he stays disciplined and focused.

Although a string of difficult matches once tested his confidence, perseverance carried him through. Looking ahead, Kaseba hopes to secure a university scholarship in the United States while pursuing studies in finance. Ultimately, he dreams of competing professionally.

With quiet determination and a leader’s mindset, Kaseba continues to prove that sometimes the greatest journeys begin with a simple experiment among friends.
