Norwood’s Lively Legends prove that friendship only gets better with age

A warm cup of tea, laughter across the room and new friendships waiting to be made. At the Paterson Centre in Norwood, a group of senior citizens is rewriting the story of ageing, one joyful gathering at a time.

In the heart of Norwood, the Patterson Centre hosts the Lively Legends every second Wednesday.

This group of senior citizens shares stories and laughter, proving that life after fifty can be vibrant, connected, and adventurous.

Lovina Sewsunker, a retired educator whose passion for people and community inspired her to create a space where seniors could feel seen, valued and included, founded the group exactly a year ago. “Being among people has always given me joy,” she said. “I felt a calling to start something that would encourage others to socialise, stay active and form new friendships.”

Sewsunke explained that many seniors spent long days at home, often feeling isolated. She wanted to offer them a reason to dress up, step out and reconnect with the world. The response, she said, had been heart-warming. From a small beginning, the group has grown to about 30 members, aged between 50 and 92, all eager to make the most of their time together.

Their fortnightly meetings from 10:00 to 13:00 are filled with tea, lunch, conversation and a range of activities including board games, gentle movement, health talks, crafts and art.

In the past year, the Lively Legends have enjoyed memorable outings, including a Mother’s Day lunch at Thava Restaurant, a picnic at the Johannesburg Zoo, a hop-on hop-off bus tour, and a festive Christmas celebration at Puntuns Hill Sports Centre. Sewsunke notes that these events have strengthened bonds and sparked new friendships, with members eagerly anticipating each gathering.

Their first anniversary was celebrated with life and togetherness with a pre-Valentine’s event, a birthday party for January and February members, and a shared feast. Founding members cut the cake, and the afternoon was filled with games, music, and dancing, embodying the group’s joyful spirit.

Beyond the outings and celebrations, Sewsunke believes the real magic lies in the sharing and learning that happens at each meeting. Members bring with them a wealth of life experience and talents, which they generously pass on to others. In doing so, they create a supportive circle where everyone feels valued and understood.

Sewsunke’s goal is to positively impact the lives of the elderly. She takes pride in the teamwork involved in organising events such as tea and lunch, and emphasises that the safe, welcoming venue provides the perfect space for seniors to relax and enjoy themselves.

There is still space for around 10 more members, and Sewsunke warmly invites anyone looking for companionship, laughter and meaningful connection to join. “It’s about giving yourself time, being with people of similar ages and building friendships that enrich your life.”
