National Children’s Theatre launches new outdoor amphitheatre project

A ribbon-cutting ceremony in Parktown marks the start of construction on South Africa’s first amphitheatre dedicated to young audiences.

The National Children’s Theatre (NCT) in Parktown held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on March 13 to mark the beginning of construction on a new outdoor stage and amphitheatre.

The amphitheatre, which will seat between 250 and 275 people, is set to become the first dedicated amphitheatre for children in South Africa.

The space is designed to host productions that educate and entertain young audiences, including larger performances planned in partnership with Disney. The development will also include a basement level for costume storage and maintenance.

Speaking at the event, Andrea Katz, trustee from NCT, highlighted the theatre’s plans to expand its performance space, and thanked partners who have supported the project. Katz said the new venue is expected to boost ticket sales and help support the theatre’s long-term sustainability.

She also acknowledged the contribution of sponsors and funders who have helped make the project possible, including significant support from Standard Bank.

A supporter described the development as an investment in the future of children’s theatre and praised the leadership that has guided the organisation for decades.

Organisers hope the amphitheatre will create new opportunities for children to experience theatre and expand access to the arts for young audiences across Johannesburg.
