RMB Latitudes Art Fair returns to Shepstone Gardens this May

The RMB Latitudes Art Fair returns to Shepstone Gardens from May 22 to 24, celebrating contemporary African art with a special focus on Nigeria.

The fourth edition of the RMB Latitudes Art Fair will take place at Shepstone Gardens from May 22 to 24, bringing together artists, galleries and cultural partners from across Africa and its diaspora.

Widely recognised as a leading platform for contemporary African art, the fair continues to prioritise collaboration, sustainability and long-term visibility for artists.

Co-founder and director of Latitudes, Lucy MacGarry, said the fair remained committed to expanding access to markets and creating opportunities for artists to reach new audiences.

“Our priority has always been to put artists first by centring their voices and supporting their long-term visibility,” she said.

Set against the historic terraced gardens and architecture of Shepstone Gardens, the fair offers an immersive experience that blends indoor and outdoor exhibition spaces. The setting creates a more intimate atmosphere while maintaining the professional presentation standards expected of international art fairs.

This year’s fair will also place a special spotlight on Nigeria, highlighting one of Africa’s most vibrant creative communities. Through its Focus programme, RMB Latitudes works with local partners in different countries ahead of the event to build networks and strengthen relationships within the art ecosystem.

According to RMB’s Alison Badenhorst, the initiative aims to support a sustainable art economy across Africa while helping artists, collectors and curators access both local and global opportunities.

The 2026 theme, Oasis, draws inspiration from Johannesburg’s resilience as the city marks 140 years since its founding. Curator and head of sales Denzo Nyathi said the theme reflected how creativity could flourish even in unlikely places.

“The fair embraces Johannesburg’s spirit of renewal and highlights the power of the arts to connect communities and reimagine cultural spaces,” he said.

Early bird tickets for the fair go on sale on March 11, priced at R320. Visitors can expect a diverse programme celebrating creativity from across the continent, set within one of Johannesburg’s most distinctive garden venues.
