St John’s College play remembered struggle icon Chris Hani
April 10 marked the 30th anniversary of the death of anti-apartheid activist Chris Hani.
St John’s College in Houghton was proud to present Hani – The Legacy, the school’s annual major production from March 22-25.
Chris Hani’s widow, Limpho Hani, attend the opening performance and the two daughters Neo and Lindiwe attended the final performance.

Hani – The Legacy tells the exceptional story of the struggle hero, in a vibrant and contemporary hip-hop style.
Head of drama, Pippa Sandilands said the play was inspired by the original Market Theatre Laboratory production from 2018.

Front: Deon Makaza, Limpho Hani , Lindiwe Hani and Thandolwethu Kambule.
“We were so inspired by the energy and passion of the performers, and knew this was a play we would love to do at our school, with a bigger cast.”
Sandilands added that four different students portrayed Hani at various stages of his life as he tackled injustice and led change.

Transformation & Diversity deputy head, Allan Magubane said it was fitting to bring a focus to Hani’s life through Hani – The legacy since this month marks 30 years since Chris Hani was assassinated.
