Newly elected Joburg DA caucus leader Belinda Echeozonjoku aims to hold the mayor accountable through her new role
Ward 74 Belinda Echeozonjoku is the new Joburg DA caucus leader elected on June 5.
Ward 74 councillor Belinda Echeozonjoku said her new title and role as Joburg’s DA caucus leader makes her feel honoured.
Echeozonjoku added that she was looking forward to fulfilling her new role. “The new role will entail leading the official opposition, leading the DA caucus in Johannesburg to hold the mayor and his executive accountable to ensure that due process is followed according to Municipal Systems and Structures Act.”
She noted that there was also a newly elected Shadow Mayoral Committee (SMC), which is tasked with the critical duty of holding the mayoral executive accountable and ensuring that the actions of the office align with the values the party holds dear and the needs of its constituents.
Additionally, the SMC will guide the DA Johannesburg caucus, enabling the party to maintain its reputation as an effective, proactive opposition, ever watchful and prepared to advocate for what is best for the city and its residents.
She explained that one of her priorities while serving residents of Johannesburg as ward councillor and leader of the official opposition in Johannesburg, is to ensure that ratepayers and all residents get treated fairly in service delivery issues raised.
Echeozonjoku said her highlights of being a ward councillor include resident’s issues being resolved and fighting for everyone to be treated equally as far as services are concerned.
