Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg 2025 prefect is ready to lead by example

Before becoming a prefect Julian McDonald was the volleyball team captain. He feels this role has helped him prepare for what lies ahead as he takes on the role of prefect.

Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg learner Julian McDonald aims to give back to his school through his leadership role.

Julian explained that when he was younger he never thought of becoming a prefect, but throughout the years he has been at DSJ, he began to see how being a part of the prefects team could be an amazing experience, and an opportunity for him to give back to the school.

He explained that his role as a prefect is to serve as a connection between the learners, teachers, and management.

“Being elected as a prefect means that I am representing the voice of my peers; it means being a role model by setting the standard of how the school’s rules should be followed. Helping enforce those rules and maintaining discipline is also a part of the job.”

Before being a prefect, Julian was the captain of the school’s volleyball team, which gave him the opportunity to lead a team of people through victories and hardships.

“This has taught me how to deal with stressful situations and to remain level-headed when faced with a problem. Having had these experiences has taught me how to effectively work as a team and how to conform to the role required of me.”

Julian added that in dealing with challenges he always remembered that being a leader required one to be open to criticism and ideas. “The people you are leading are as important as you are and can always provide valuable opinions and ideas that can help you succeed. So, being open to hearing these things is very important. Supporting your team is very important as a leader. Without them one would not be able to prosper.”
