Concrete truck crashes into trees after brakes fail on Jan Suts Avenue, Craighall

No one was injured after the truck crashed into the trees.

When a concrete truck’s brakes failed, it used trees to cushion a crash that sent shock waves through nearby buildings.

Traffic came to a halt at around 09:10 on April 17. According to the driver, after noticing his brakes had failed, he knew a crash was imminent. He decided to use trees on an island in the middle of Jan Smuts Avenue, Craighall, saving a possibly fatal collision with other road users.

One of the eyewitnesses said the truck almost killed him.

“As I was driving, I saw this truck coming in reverse. I was on the other lane going up, and as soon as I saw the truck hitting the trees on the island, I swerved to avoid it. I’m actually terrified.”

Another, at a construction site, praised the driver for steadily holding on to the steering wheel.

“He is a good driver. He did not panic and managed to hold on to the truck to avoid crashing into other cars. Because at the speed his truck was travelling, if he had hit any car, he would have caused a huge crash.”

No injuries were reported, and the driver of the truck, although shaken, was unharmed.
