16-year-old Birdhaven resident aims to raise funds for GBV through tennis tournament

Duncan van Niekerk is a long-time supporter of charitable causes

Birdhaven resident and Hilton College Grade 10 learner, Duncan Van Niekerk, will play in a five-day tennis tournament from July 8-13 to raise awareness and fight against gender-based violence (GBV) in his community.

Driven by empathy and inspired by a tragic event within his school community, Duncan is using tennis to raise both awareness and funds for the Angels’ Care Crisis Centre, an organisation that provides vital support to survivors of GBV.

“After hearing the devastating story of a learner who lost two family members in one week due to GBV, I was moved to take action.”
As a long-time supporter of charitable causes, from clothing drives to feeding the hungry during Covid-19, the tennis player decided to take his advocacy a step further by launching a formal campaign through the Sports for Lives platform.

Throughout the five-day tennis tournament, the Birdhaven resident will wear a GBV awareness ribbon and Angels Care logo and use his matches as a platform to speak out against violence and raise funds for the Angels’ Care Crisis Centre.
