The excavation at the entrance of McDonald’s Craighall Park remains an eyesore

A new excavation believed to be the source of a leak on Jan Smuts emerged in Craighall Park.

Johannesburg Water’s excavation on Jan Smuts continues to be delayed, while a new excavation believed to be the source of the leak on the main road emerged at the entrance of McDonald’s Craighall Park.

The Gazette visited the latest excavation in Craighall Park on August 25 and was met with littered water and pipes that seemed to have been casually installed in the hole.
Johannesburg Water spokesperson, Nombuso Shabalala,’s last response on August 5 was: “The Johannesburg Water depot team conducted the necessary assessments, and the team found that the water is coming from the McDonald’s up the road along Jan Smuts.”

Shabalala added that the water came from sleeve pipes, which are used to cover other services such as fibre, so Johannesburg Water’s Unaccounted for Water (UFW) team was trying to detect the exact location of the leak along the pipeline on Jan Smuts Avenue.

Johannesburg Water updated the Gazette on August 20 and said they’d check if there was any progress made on the matter.

The Gazette reached out for a response on August 25 and will update the story with a response.
