The sound of bouncing balls, cheering crowds, and pounding music echoed across Wits University on September 13, as South Africa’s finest streetball teams turned the campus into a high-octane arena.
The first-ever Red Bull Half Court National Finals brought together the top men’s and women’s squads from Cape Town, Durban, and Pretoria for a day of fierce competition and unforgettable moments.

In the women’s final, the Hoop Hustlers stormed past Size Nenye with a 7–2 victory, led by Lauren Fredericks, Monicah Tlou, Khanyi Maphisa, and Liyabona Shannon Nondala. On the men’s side, the MBB Blue Soldiers clinched the national title over Elite Pace Academy, sending Nino Dim, Lebesa Selepe, Neo Mothiba, and Rabbi Belolo-Lou on a ticket to Dubai this November for the Red Bull Half Court World Final.

For Maphisa of the Hoop Hustlers, the tournament was an emotional whirlwind. “Participating in such an event for the first time was overwhelming,” she said. “During the semi-final, with just a minute and a half left, I was entrusted with the final shot, and we did it. That moment changed everything for us.”

The event was more than a competition; it was a showcase of style, creativity, and teamwork. With the unique Own the Court rule, it wasn’t just about winning, but putting up the highest scores and playing with flair. Attendees enjoyed music, cultural performances, and community gatherings alongside the fast-paced 3×3 action.

Men’s captain Selepe reflected on the victory: “We’ve just been crowned champions of the South African Red Bull Half Court and booked our ticket to Dubai. You only get one shot at this thing called life, so keep firing.”

Fredericks, leading the women’s team, added, “Sharing this journey with such an amazing group of ladies has been incredible. We’re thrilled to head to Dubai and see what we can do on the world stage.”

With support from Fila, Spalding, and 5FM, the Red Bull Half Court National Finals marked a turning point for South African basketball. As Wits University settles back into normalcy, all eyes are already on Dubai, where these champions will showcase South Africa’s streetball talent to the world.
