Bestselling author and social activist Jackie Katleho Phamotse recently launched her new novel, The Advocate, at Exclusive Books in Rosebank.
The event was filled with emotion and reflection as Phamotse shared how the story was inspired by her family’s love for Rooibos tea and a deep curiosity about its origins.
“We’ve always wondered who the family behind Rooibos is,” she said. “That curiosity gave life to this story and reminded me how important it is to reclaim our heritage.”

The Advocate explores power, corruption, and family legacy, set against the scenic backdrop of Clanwilliam. The setting adds a distinctly South African texture, while Jackie’s criminology studies helped shape her understanding of justice and morality.
“When I don’t know something, I study it. Creativity must always be informed by knowledge,” she explained.
Known for tackling difficult themes, Phamotse’s earlier BARE series shed light on human trafficking and exploitation.
With The Advocate, she turns her attention to how truth, legacy, and identity intersect. “I never want to write a story that feels empty,” she said. “Every book must challenge both me and my readers.”

Her storytelling stands out for its layered characters, rich detail, and emotional honesty. “Even small things like how a person walks or what they enjoy eating matter. Those details make them real,” she added.
From humble beginnings in Soweto to becoming one of South Africa’s most compelling literary voices, Phamotse’s journey reflects courage and persistence. Writing began as her way of healing and has now become her way of documenting history.
As she prepares for her upcoming Showmax series, Phamotse remains focused on her purpose. “Writing helps me connect with others and tell the stories that must be told,” she said.
The Advocate is more than a novel. It is a reflection on heritage, identity, and the courage to speak truth to power.
