Nine-year-old’s birthday wish brings hope to mums and babies
Instead of gifts, a young Kingsmead learner chose to give her birthday away. Her kindness is now warming the hearts of vulnerable mothers and premature babies.
When Kingsmead Primary School learner Giorgia Bemelman turned nine on October 6, she decided her birthday would not be about presents. Instead, she asked friends to donate nappies, wipes, baby essentials and gift vouchers to help mothers and newborns at Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital.

Her wish came to life on World Prematurity Day on November 17, when she joined the Footprints 4 Sam team to hand out the donations in the Kangaroo Mother Care Ward and Ward 1, where mothers spend long hours holding and nurturing premature babies.

Footprints 4 Sam, which has supported these wards through upgrades and comfort initiatives, said they were moved by Giorgia’s act of generosity. Co-founder Melissa Williams-Platt described it as a reminder that compassion has no age limit.
Giorgia said she simply wanted to help babies who arrived too soon and the mothers who care for them. Her birthday choice has already eased the burden for families facing difficult days and uncertain nights.
