Badminton star shines in Angola as Team SA dominate African Youth Games
At just 16, Chloe Lai claimed silver in girls' doubles at the African Youth Games, helping Team SA to a record-breaking medal haul.
At just 16, badminton star Chloe Lai has already made her mark on the continental stage. Representing South Africa at the African Youth Games in Angola, she won silver in the girls’ doubles event alongside her cousin, combining skill and strong teamwork to take on the continent’s best.
“It was nerve-wracking facing the Ghanaian team, but we knew each other’s game inside out,” Chloe said. “Training and trust made all the difference.”

Chloe began playing badminton just over four years ago, drawn to the fast pace and technical variety of the sport. Her rise has been rapid; she helped Team SA win gold at the U15 All Africa Championship in 2023 and has competed in several international tournaments since.
Balancing school with five weekly training sessions, Chloe thrives under pressure. “I focus on one point at a time, and communication with my partner keeps us in the game,” she explained.

Team South Africa finished the Games at the top of the medal table with a record 99 medals. For Chloe, wearing the green and gold is about pride and opportunity. “It’s an honour to represent my country and show what South African sport can do.”
Looking ahead, Chloe aims to help secure victory at the All Africa Senior Championship and compete in the U19 event later this year, determined to build on her growing legacy.
