St Mary’s tennis talent Taylor White continues to raise her game

Backed by family, driven by discipline and inspired by friendship, Taylor White is steadily carving out her place in South African tennis.

For Taylor White, tennis has never just been a sport; it has been part of her life almost from the beginning. She first stepped onto a court at the age of four, drawn in by her father’s passion for the game, and from that moment, the racquet rarely left her hand.

Now a learner at St Mary’s School, Waverley, Taylor has grown within a school environment that demands excellence. She credits the school’s strong sporting culture for shaping her discipline and focus, noting that the sense of community and support at St Mary’s has played a vital role in her development as a competitive player.

One of her most meaningful achievements came at the Joburg Summer Tennis Tournament, where she claimed gold. While the win itself was special, Taylor reflects more on the quality of the tennis played. Facing opponents who knew her game well meant long, structured rallies that tested both her patience and resilience.

The final carried added significance as she competed against her schoolmate and close friend, Idara Usen. The match was intense, but underpinned by respect and familiarity, making it a memorable experience for both players.

Taylor has also represented Gauteng Central at the inter-provincial level for three consecutive years, an achievement she describes as her proudest. Looking ahead, she hopes to compete in ITF tournaments and ultimately earn a university scholarship overseas. Calm under pressure and inspired by Carlos Alcaraz’s on-court demeanour, Taylor’s journey continues to be defined by steady growth and quiet determination.
