Slipper Day is the foundation’s biggest annual fundraiser, calling on all South Africans to buy a R20 sticker and wear it with their slippers on the May 29, to help make dreams come true for children with life-threatening illnesses.

Reach for a Dream CEO Julia Sotirianakos explained that the non-profit organisation’s (NPO) mandate is to fulfil the dreams of children who have life-threatening diseases. “We work across the country in government hospitals, where our field workers and staff work tirelessly in the different paediatric wards to find children who are battling these life-threatening illnesses and begin a journey with their families.”

Sotiriankos added that it was not an easy journey because the NPO met families at a vulnerable time of their lives. A time when they were not at their happiest.

“After engaging with the child for some time, and discovering what their dream is, we come back to the office to make that dream a reality. The whole point of the NPO is to inspire hope and allow the child to believe that their dreams are attainable and have a purpose worth fighting for.”

Zinokhanyo Nyangule, a Reach for a Dream beneficiary, said the NPO has had a positive impact in her life. “I met the NPO in 2020, when I was diagnosed with cancer for the second time and they were there for me. They were also there with me after receiving the news that the cancer has come back for the third time last year. They have not only helped me reach the goals I had; they’ve been there during the difficult times I have encountered in having cancer.”

Stickers are available from April 13 to May 13 at Wimpy, Dis-Chem Pharmacies, Baby City, Crocs, Crazy Store, Toys R Us, Babies R Us, and Krispy Kreme stores nationwide.
