At nearly 80, Malcolm Dorfman of Dorfman Karate continues to dedicate his life to the discipline he has followed for decades. For him, karate is more than a sport. It is a form of education that shapes character, discipline and respect.
After running his dojo in Parktown North for 42 years, Dorfman has now moved into a new chapter, relocating to a restored heritage space in Parkwood. This lifelong passion has led Malcolm Dorfman and Dorfman Karate to establish a new dojo, created as a legacy for his son and loyal students. The Dorfman Karate dojo is now located in a restored heritage building at 2 Cardigan Road in Parkwood. Its story is also a personal one. Dorfman grew up at 29 Lower Park Drive, and with the dojo linked to 61 Lower Park Drive, the move feels like a return to where it all began. The building dates back to 1926, the same decade that shotokan karate was introduced in Japan, reflecting his deep respect for tradition.
Building the dojo required a significant investment, but for Dorfman, the aim was clear. It was to create an inspiring environment where students are motivated to reach their full potential. His vision includes producing world-class competitors, with plans to take a large team to Japan in 2027.
