Rosebank-based entrepreneur Grant Donson’s journey began with volunteering at a florist and has since blossomed into owning his own floral business. Donson, who grew up surrounded by flowers, said he began learning the business of floristry and developing his craft at the age of 14 in his hometown of Plettenberg Bay.

“I volunteered at a florist store but was doing miscellaneous chores like making tea and cleaning. Still, I had goals of being a florist. In my spare time, I arranged flowers for clients, which they appreciated and bought.”

He added that he was tasked with flower arrangements and décor for his matric farewell dance, which he executed with excitement. That same year, he realised his potential in the floral industry and decided to move to Cape Town, where he learned from floral masters.

“I then moved to Johannesburg, where I was employed by another florist and informally started running a part-time business, selling flower arrangements at a pop-up in my spare time.”

In 2017, Donson took a leap of faith into full entrepreneurship and formally registered his business. He later completed a Management Essentials course at Wits Business School, which he said was a turning point in his career.

“I have never had doubts in my journey because I’ve always believed that anything was possible if I set my mind to it. I had a supportive partner who encouraged me to further my education, which I now use as building blocks in my career.”

Donson sharpened his skills in business development strategy, analysis, financial management, marketing, and social media, taking his business to the next level.

Two years later, he owns a fully-fledged florist, with a focus on staying at the forefront of floral trends.
