St Teresa’s celebrates academic achievement of learner

7 distinctions, top 1% placements, and a calm approach to pressure earned Jennifer Sweeney her place among South Africa’s top achievers in the matric exams of 2025.

St Teresa’s School is celebrating Jennifer Sweeney’s exceptional academic performance.

She emerged as the top academic achiever for the Class of 2025, based on her aggregate, earning an impressive seven distinctions and securing a place in the top 1% nationally for accounting and life orientation.

Behind the outstanding results lies a story of balance, resilience, and strong support. Jennifer credits her success to three key factors: The unwavering encouragement of her family, friends, and teachers, a balanced lifestyle, and personal accountability.

“They pushed me through the hard times and reminded me that they believed in me.” She added that maintaining time for sport, family, and herself helped her stay grounded throughout a demanding year.

Like many matric pupils, Jennifer faced the familiar distractions of milestone celebrations and the temptation to procrastinate. She admits that baking sweet treats or deep-cleaning her room sometimes took priority over studying. However, reminding herself of her long-term goals helped her regain focus and keep moving forward.

Managing academic pressure required careful planning. By prioritising tasks and breaking larger projects into manageable pieces, Jennifer avoided feeling overwhelmed. Continuing to take part in school sports also played a vital role, providing, what she describes, as a well-earned break from academics and a chance to socialise with friends.

She emphasised the importance of her support system throughout her matric journey. “My family, friends, and teachers comforted me when needed, and guided me when required. Their belief in me made me stronger.”

Jennifer’s advice to future matric pupils is rooted in preparation and consistency. Regular revision, staying on top of coursework, and practising with past examination papers helped her identify weaker areas and prepare for the pressures of timed assessments.

Looking ahead, Jennifer plans to study chemical engineering at the University of Pretoria. Reflecting on her matric year, she says the experience taught her valuable lessons in time management and the importance of seeking support during challenging moments.

“Feeling overwhelmed at times is normal, but dealing with it in positive and constructive ways makes all the effort worthwhile.”

Her achievements stand as a proud moment for St Teresa’s School and an inspiration to learners navigating their own matric journeys.
