The DP World Wanderers Stadium in Illovo celebrated 70 years of sporting excellence on September 22.

Since opening its doors in 1956, the venue has hosted iconic international cricket encounters. The venue’s first Test match was played between South Africa and England in 1956, while its first One-Day International came 36 years later, when South Africa faced India on December 13, 1992.

Lions Cricket CEO Jono Leaf-Wright said celebrating seven decades was momentous for one of South Africa’s iconic stadiums. He noted that the stadium hosted the 2003 and 2007 world cup finals, and predicted the ICC cricket final would return to the venue in 2027.

DP World head of corporate affairs and sustainability in Africa Esha Mansingh said it was a special moment to celebrate alongside the Wanderers and Lions family.

Mansingh added that the milestone honoured their partnership since 2019 and reflected DP World’s commitment to cricket and sports as a whole.
