Roedean Academy honours matric Class of 2026

A special ceremony at Founders Hall celebrates personal growth and resilience alongside academic excellence for Barnato Park High School learners.

The matric Class of 2026 gathered at Founders Hall at Roedean School on October 10 for the annual Roedean Academy prize-giving ceremony.

The ceremony opened with a prayer led by Reverend Roger before academy administrator Caroline Green welcomed the Grade 12 learners and reflected on the emotions that often accompany prize-giving.

While the occasion celebrates excellence, Green acknowledged that not every learner would receive an award. She encouraged the girls to look beyond the accolades and recognise the personal journeys that had brought them to this milestone.

“You are often told that what matters is doing your personal best. Words you have most certainly heard from me too. And while that is absolutely true, wouldn’t it be nice to hear your name spoken out loud at this event?” she said.

Green explained that the ceremony would make a point of recognising every matriculant, not out of sympathy, but out of admiration for what each girl had overcome to reach this stage of her life.

“Only you know what it has taken to get you into this seat today. Each one of you has faced challenges in your relatively short lives. Many of you have experienced moments when life felt almost unbearable,” she said.

She reminded the learners that their courage and perseverance deserved recognition, regardless of whether they received a prize.

“And yet, here you are. Your courage and tenacity have carried you through and brought you into the light where you belong,” Green said.

Her message set a thoughtful tone for the celebration, placing the individual experiences of the learners alongside their academic achievements. It also encouraged those present to celebrate one another, recognising that every girl had a story worth acknowledging.

Focus on core subjects

The Roedean Academy is a community initiative spearheaded by Roedean School. The programme supports high school learners from Barnato Park High School by providing additional lessons in English, mathematics, accounting, and physical science.

Through this initiative, the academy seeks to support learners in their academic journeys and provide opportunities for them to strengthen their knowledge and skills.

The prize-giving offered an opportunity to reflect on the progress made by the matric learners and the determination required to reach the end of their school careers.

Following the formal proceedings, the girls enjoyed tea and snacks, bringing the occasion to a relaxed close as they shared in the day’s celebrations.
