Craighall Park football academy uses brain science to build smarter footballers
At IQ Football, young players are learning more than skills; they are training their minds to think, adapt, and perform under pressure.
In the heart of Craighall Park, something truly unique is unfolding on the football pitch. At IQ Football, every pass, movement, and decision forms part of a much deeper lesson. Here, young players are not only learning to master the ball; they’re learning to master their minds.
Founded by Sean Szabo, IQ Football combines the worlds of neuroscience and sport to create intelligent, adaptable players. “The idea of IQ Football was birthed in England,” Szabo explains. “I merged my studies in business with my love for football, coaching, and neuroscience. That is how I got into this brain-centred approach.”

The philosophy behind the academy is refreshingly different. The goal is not to produce robotic players who follow instructions, but to nurture thinkers who understand the game from within. “If you scream at a player all the time, you are creating a robot. We want to develop intelligent players who make their own choices on the field.”
Training sessions at IQ Football differ significantly from those at most academies. One activity, for example, uses colour-coded goals. A player receives a pass and must shoot towards the goal that matches the colour called out by the coach. The instruction comes only a moment before the strike, forcing the player to make a quick decision. “It is about reducing thinking time. Professional players are not necessarily faster with their feet. They are faster in their minds.”
The focus extends well beyond football skills. The academy places strong emphasis on the holistic development of every player, helping them grow in confidence, discipline, and self-belief.

“Success is not only about scoring goals. If a player improves their grades or their confidence, that is just as important as improving their performance on the field.”
IQ Football’s mission has reached communities that might not otherwise have access to such opportunities. Through the academy’s foundation, a training centre has been established in Zandspruit, where around 200 young players will soon receive world-class coaching and mentorship in their own community.
For Szabo, the dream continues to evolve. “We want to keep developing players who love the game and think for themselves. It is about more than football. It is about shaping good people and future leaders.”
