Excitement rises at the pride prepares for the 2025/26 cricket season

With games coming up, and a legacy to preserve, fans are encouraged to download the Lions Cricket app, powered by Telkom, to constantly be in contact with the results and news from their favourite cricket team.

The DP World Lions men and women cricket teams are ready to tackle the 2025/26 season. The season launch took place on September 18 on the field of Africa’s tier one cricket stadium, the DP World Wanderers Stadium.

The pride, friends, fans, families, and key stakeholders were in attendance at the morning’s festivities, admiring sky-divers, dancers, freebies, and a fashion show which showcased the pride’s new kit.

The Central Gauteng Lions last month concluded their 2024/25 season with the unions best financial results in the past 12 years. Added to that the pride’s 3 domestic trophies, 11 2024/25 CSA Award trophies, the Sports Organisation of the Year Trophy, for the second consecutive year, and much more, the ambitions are sky-high as they head in to hunt the 2025/26 season.

Lions Cricket CEO Jono Leaf-Wright explained that the teams enjoyed being the country’s most successful union, and that it was their energy for excellence that powered them forward.

“We are financially, mentally, and physically fit, from the bottom, through to the top, boardroom to boundary. The people of our pride find purpose in playing, love to positively impact the lives of others, and genuinely believe in the power of sport to do good.”

In recognition, and celebration, of the union’s history of excellence, the #LegacyOfChampions campaign was launched. Building from the bottom up, through the Telkom talent acceleration programme, the next generation is hard at work.

Dr Earl Glennistor, president of the Central Gauteng Lions Board, stressed the importance of unity, passion, and purpose in building a thriving sports community.

His focus on teamwork, inclusivity, and long-term growth emphasised not only a winning strategy, but also a commitment to enriching the lives of everyone involved in the game of cricket.

“I wish our Lions pride all the best for the upcoming season, and thank every player, school, club, partner, and fan for their unwavering support.”

They play at the stadium again on December 19, with the SA20 starting soon after, on New Year’s Day, also at the stadium. The DP World Lions men will kick off their season with the 4-day domestic series, followed by the T20 Challenge from the end of October.
