Roedean School wins 2025 Prestige Cup as Kingsmead beats St Dominic’s in key match

The Roedean School Prestige Cup showcased thrilling water polo action and a strong commitment to water safety, with Kingsmead College narrowly beating St Dominic’s in one of the final matches and Roedean School claiming overall victory.

The Roedean School Prestige Cup concluded on October 11, marking the 15th edition of the tournament.
More than a water polo competition, the event promotes water safety and aims to prevent drowning, which claims 1 477 lives annually in South Africa.

Participating schools are required to partner with schools from low-income areas to provide swimming lessons and water safety training.

This year, Reddam House Bedfordview worked with Tokoza Learn-to-Swim, while Kingsmead College partnered with Parkhurst Primary School, among others.

The tournament began in February, with Roedean, St Stithians and Beaulieu emerging as the top scorers. Through Roedean School’s Learn-to-Swim programme, more than 10 000 children have received vital water safety training.

In one of the final matches of the tournament, Kingsmead College faced St Dominic’s in a thrilling encounter. St Dominic’s dominated from the start, despite having no substitutes, and took an early lead heading into the first half.

Kingsmead fought back and managed to draw level, ending the match 9–9. The game went into penalties, where Kingsmead scored all three spot-kicks, while St Dominic’s, already fatigued from playing without substitutes, were unable to convert.

The final score was 10–9 to Kingsmead College.

Overall, Roedean School won the tournament and received R30 000, St Stithians College came second with R20 000, and Reddam House Bedfordview placed third with R10 000.

All prize money will be used to support and sustain each school’s Learn-to-Swim programme.

The 2025 Prestige Cup once again highlighted the importance of water safety, competitive spirit, and community partnership, proving that its impact extends far beyond the pool.
