Pirates Tennis Club appoint two new coaches
GREENSIDE - The Pirates Tennis Club in Greenside has appointed a new coaching team, which is a partnership between Sue Rollinson and Byron Schmidt from Fairlands.
“We are a good balance of experience and modern technology,” said Sue Rollinson and Byron Schmidt. The duo who, boast more than 10 years of experience between the two of them, were thrilled about the partnership and opportunity.
“We hope to provide a platform for the kids to portray their talents,” the duo said. Schmidt said he was looking forward to the challenge. “I am passionate about tennis and look forward to the challenge.”
Rollinson and Schmidt are both fully qualified tennis coaches at the highest levels and are passionate about the sport.
Rollinson started her extensive tennis career at the age of nine and has played professionally overseas. She has also participated in all major tournaments including Wimbledon, the U.S Open, the French Open and the German Open.
“My claim to fame has definitely been beating Billie-Jean King and Wendy Turnbull,”she joked. Rollinson was ranked in the top 100 in the world in 1982.
Equally acclaimed Schmidt began playing tennis at the age of 10. Schmidt has played in all junior and top tournaments in South Africa. It is clear that he too is passionate about the sport. “I have been coaching for the past 12 years,” he said.
Schmidt has experience as a head coach in numerous schools including: Marais-Viljoen, Rand Heart Laerskool and at the Gauteng East Provincial in Houghton East.
In addition to coaching at the Pirates Tennis Club, Rollinson also coaches at Jan Celliers. “It is my third year working at the school and it is a privilege to be working at Jan Celliers; I love working there!” she said.
