JCC enhances the Youth
YEOVILLE - The Johannesburg Cricket Club, previously known as the Betrams Cricket Club, is a hidden gem buried in the valley between Kensington and Yeoville Ridges near the Ellis Park precinct.
Even though the surrounding area is low income, the facilities at the club are immaculate and the grounds are beautiful.
The cricket oval arises from the previously untidy football ground, Maurice Freeman Park.
From an untidy football field, the club now boasts tall stadium lights, a clubhouse, great facilities and change rooms.
The club has eight teams beginning from U9, playing in conjunction with the Gauteng Cricket Board leagues and they are coached by passionate and capable volunteers.
Amon Maluleke, the care taker and grounds man of the club, said, “It has been an eye opener working with children. It’s a privilege and also we promote the culture of Ubuntu, children growing together in a diverse culture and the importance of life.”
Siyabonga Peter, one of the players from the club, said, “For me it’s about brotherhood, to take care of each other. It shaped my life and gave me direction.”
A majority of the children playing and learning cricket at the club are from surrounding schools in the area.
