SA impresses at Tang Soo Do World Champs
JOBURG - Team South Africa picked up an impressive, record tally of 24 gold, 27 silver and 20 bronze medals at the Tang Soo Do World Championships which took place in Las Vegas, USA, on 31 July and 1 August.
The South Africans competed against Tang Soo Do (TSD) Martial Arts teams from England, Scotland, Holland, Greece, the United States of America, Germany, Poland, Belgium, Denmark, Ireland, Aruba and Malaysia, and did South Africa proud.
The contestants from Wits TSD Club and Alchemy Academy, with students from Sandton, Northcliff, Melville and Randburg, coached by Master Gregory Hart, particularly distinguished themselves, winning a tally of 11 gold, nine silver and seven bronze medals, a total of 27 out of the grand total.
Trisha Rajkumar from Wits won gold for Sparring, gold for Weapons and bronze for Forms. Michael Schrenk, also from Wits won gold for Forms, gold for Weapons and bronze for Sparring, and Titus Masike, a Wits student, won bronze in Weapons. Wits, therefore, totalled four gold medals and three bronze medals. Wits assistant coach Tommie Strydom also competed and won gold for Sword Forms and Bronze for Forms.
Prior to the World Championships in Las Vegas, Alchemy Academy and Wits TSD Club Teams had won 15 gold, 24 Silver and 17 Bronze medals at the South African Tang Soo Do National Championships.
Wits coach, Master Gregory Hart is a 6th Dan Tang Soo Do, and 2nd Dan in Haedong Kumdo (Korean two hand Sword).
