‘Old bullets’ shoot the rapids
ROSEBANK – Local canoeists Dean Burscough and Harald Wattrus proved that age is nothing but a number after taking the win at the Liebensbergvlei River Race.
The 32km race started at Reitz Water Works near Frankfort, Free State, and finished at Zorgvliet Farm. It provided superb rolling wave trains and fast currents, as well as some drops with big stopper waves.
The weather was not playing along in the race’s favour and the dreary drizzle kept many competitors at bay. Wattrus, from Greenside, and Burscough, a Rosebank resident, were both elated with their win nonetheless, and also grateful that the water was so clean and clear.
Both competed in the Sub Grand Master category for those between 55 and 60 years of age, but that didn’t stop them from finishing first overall in a time of 2:17:00.
“It’s a very enjoyable paddle with strong flows,” said Wattrus.
“It’s excellent Fish River training and hopefully next year the weather will permit more competitors to participate.”
Burscough also expressed his dismay at the dismal weather. “Conditions were lousy, but the rapids were lovely,” he said.
“Those who didn’t compete actually missed out on a good competition. As two old bullets, we were happy to take the win.”
The race was hosted by the Dabulamanzi Canoe Club based at Emmarentia Dam, to provide an opportunity for local canoeists to prepare for the upcoming Hansa Fish River Marathon, a two-day 80km race in Cradock that will be taking place in October.
“Both canoeists are members of the club and they flew our flag high,” said club representative Jennie Dallas.
“It appears that the youth are easily intimidated and scared away from challenges when the weather is dreary, overcast, or drizzly, while the older, more committed and disciplined characters do not quit as easily.”
