Bowling for the less fortunate
Bridging the divide of colour through sport whilst raising funds for the less fortunate.
The interaction of young, old, black, white, able-bodied, disabled, beginner and Protea players resulted in an enormously successful competition of lawn bowls held at Lombardy East Bowling Club.
The competition was attended by players as young as eight years of age, and showed that bowls is now becoming a sport for youngsters who do not relish the tough contact sports.
The unique format and scoring system of this competition, which accommodated 24 teams playing in alternate rounds on one green, led to short and exciting games, and gave everyone an equal chance to win the main prize of R6 000,00.
Desiree Levin, one of the organisers of the competition, said they were delighted with the way the tournament proceeded, and were encouraged by the number of young stars who participated.
“The aim of the competition, besides bridging the divide in colour, was also to show how bowls is now becoming a sport for younger people. This particular competition was also a fundraiser for Disability Sport [a group of disabled bowlers] and those less fortunate,” she said.
