AFTER the surprise defeat to Delfos in their previous game, Old Eds Premier League team bounced back by beating Marks Park by 77 runs and gained a bonus point.
Put into bat on a bowler-friendly pitch, Old Eds lost their star batsman, Matthew Daniel early, and their second wicket in the 10th over. Rob Deere Jones played a patient innings of 46 off 121 balls, but wickets still fell around him and at 101/5 they were in a precarious situation.
The tail wagged with Jaco Delport (22), Murray Workman (27) and newcomer, Matthew MacDonald (30), seeing them reach 203/9.
Known primarily as a batting team, Old Eds knocked that theory on its head as the opening bowlers soon had Pirates reeling at 49/7. Scott Jameson was relentless with great pace and shape and finished with superb figures of 5/36. Newton completed a good début with two wickets and then the “spin twins” of Workman and Scott Conway, wrapped up the tail to bowl Pirates out for 126.
UJ have – as expected – already won the league but the fight for second is still very much on. Eds occupy that spot with 29 points but Khosa are only five points behind with a game in hand, and Wanderers and Marks Park are locked on 23 points, each having two games in hand over Eds.
