Still the king of clubs
KILLARNEY – Golfers at Killarney Country Club had the pleasure of playing with golfing legend Gary Player at the club’s Captain’s Day held on 4 February.
Player, South Africa’s most successful golfer with nine major championship titles, enjoyed a round of 18 holes before being honoured at a dinner in the club’s Crystal Room.
Play was slightly delayed by a short burst of rain, but the fourball alliance tournament with two scores to count continued shortly after.
The fourball consisting of Selwyn and Daniel Nathan, partnering with Eric Moss and Jocko Nestadt finished on a score of 95 to win the day. Each member of the winning fourball received a Callaway Big Bertha driver. Many other prizes were also up for grabs such as Callaway golf and luggage bags, a gold-plated pitchfork and limited edition wines.
Club captain David Lever, said he was in sheer awe of playing alongside such an esteemed golfer such as Player.
“Playing with him was a surreal experience,” said Lever, who has avidly followed Player’s career throughout the years.
“Learning about his humble beginnings and all about his journey in life to be where is now, is amazing. He truly is an inspiration,” Lever said in conclusion.
