Arrows bag Diski challenge title

JOBURG - 'Abafana Bes'thende', as Lamontville Golden Arrows are often affectionately referred to by their supporters, conquered the MultiChoice Diski Challenge in dramatic fashion after trailing Free State Stars most of the game.

Abafana Bes’thende, or the Backheel Boys, as Lamontville Golden Arrows are affectionately referred to by their supporters, won the MultiChoice Diski Challenge in dramatic fashion after trailing Free State Stars most of the game, but eventually winning 2-1.

Arrows, who were leading the pack in the challenge log standings by a single point with 31 to that of their closest rivals, Mamelodi Sundowns who were tied on 30 with the Limpopo side, Polokwane City, came from a goal down to level the scores within four minutes of the final whistle.

The new champions of the second edition of the challenge then netted a late winner in the referee’s optional time to seal the game.

This was to the anguish of the Brazilians who had dreams of winning the title after coming so close in last year’s challenge when they were beaten in the final by AmaTuks. This season they did everything possible by thrashing Platinum Stars 4-0 in their last game to put them on 33 points. This could have handed the Brazilians the title had Arrows lost, or drawn, their game.

City, who also won their last game against Maritzburg United 1-0, would have been pipped to the title by a superior Brazilians’ goal aggregate.

The Premier Soccer League acting CEO and owner of Arrows congratulated her Durban-based team for winning the 2015/16 MultiChoice Diski Challenge after gaining promotion to top-flight football following a season in the National First Division. “On behalf of the league, we would like to congratulate Golden Arrows management, coaching staff, the players, the sponsors MultiChoice and the club supporters for this achievement. We would like also thank the rest of the clubs who put up a spirited fight during this MultiChoice Diski Challenge,” Mato Madlala said.
