Entries are open for Spar Women’s Race Joburg

EMMARENTIA – Charities will benefit immensely from this year's race, so why not drop off a pair and show you care?

South Africa’s ‘most beautiful race’ is back in Joburg so you had better get your running shoes out – but not just to run in them.

The final leg of the Spar Grand Prix series will take place at Marks Park Sports Club on 8 October. If last year’s event was anything to go by, this run will be something you cannot miss.

Included in the event is the Drop off a Pair, Show you Care campaign that Spar and Caxton Local Media co-host. The initiative collects running shoes for those in need. Last year, youngsters of Johannesburg Girls Preparatory School and Skeen Primary School were proud to receive shoes and take part in the race wearing them.

So bring your old, almost old or if you are generous, new, running shoes to one of Caxton’s Joburg branches or to the race.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the main beneficiary of the race is Reach for Recovery. The international breast cancer support group helps women with breast cancer return to daily life through providing free support by volunteers who themselves have suffered the effects of breast cancer, as well as providing a prosthesis service.

The organisers have chosen Marks Park Sports Club to host the race as the facility can accommodate the crowd of

25 000 that is expected. The club is also the City of Johannesburg’s municipal sports precinct, and so forms part of Spar’s partnership with the City.

The spacious area at the finish will be available for people to put up club tents and have braais and relax with the whole family. Food vendors will also be on hand for a bite.

As in the past, the race will take runners through some of the city’s most beautiful areas. The 10km route goes through the lovely suburbs of Greenside and Parkview, with wide, tree-lined avenues and little traffic. The 5km route goes past the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens and Emmarentia Dam.

Tickets can be bought online at www.spar.co.za and at most Spar stores.

Details: Caxton’s Joburg offices are situated at 368 Jan Smuts Avenue, Craighall, and 1 187 Cornelius Street, Weltevreden Park.
