Barnato thrash Eqinisweni in the Cosmos soccer tourney
Alexandra – The Berea-based school went through 7–2 on aggregate following their 4–1 win in Ivory Park in the first leg.
Barnato Park High School boys’ soccer team advanced to the quarterfinals of the Sibusiso ‘Cosmos’ Zwane Schools Tournament after thrashing Eqinisweni High School 3–1 in the second leg of the tournament.
The Berea-based school went through 7–2 on aggregate following their 4–1 win in Ivory Park in the first leg.
Barnato were making their maiden appearance at the 3rd Square Sports centre in Alexandra and it was Michael Nkhahle and Diego Mazanabi who put them 2–0 in the lead going into half-time.
In the second half, substitute, Sphamandla Sibande scored Barnato’s third goal. Eqinisweni failed to convert their chances but did pull one back late in the match.
Lwazi Nxumalo, Barnato’s head coach, said they had anticipated this win because they had beaten Eqinisweni in their home fixture.
“We came here already as the favourites and I’m happy with the boys they really worked hard and showed character,” he said. “But they should know that we are still yet to play other competent teams and we want to advance even further in the tournament.”
Eqinisweni coach Sibusiso Bates said, “I’m really disappointed but we will indeed go back to the drawing board.”
The tournament is organised by former Jomo Cosmos player, Sibusiso Zwane to help develop soccer in the Alex township and surrounding suburbs.
