Taekwondo school wins big
NORWOOD – A number of students from the Andre van Tonder Taekwondo Academy joined the national team to compete in the ATA world expo.
The Andre van Tonder Taekwondo Academy travelled all the way to Little Rock, Arkansas in the USA to take part in the annual American Taekwondo Association (ATA) world expo.
The event took place on 10 and 11 July where the Norwood-based academy represented South Africa. Founder and chief instructor Andre van Tonder said, “Realising how big this achievement in itself is, we have to look back in time noticing the journey these athletes have to take to reach these milestones.”
“A commitment of at least three years, training vigorously, competing at tournaments, regularly attending training seminars and much more, in order to build points, from which they are selected to be part of the South African National Team.”
He added, “Safe travels we all wished, and off the team went, truly representing South Africa with a tenacious spirit straight from the motherland, a proud national team brought back great results.”
The team was able to achieve 21 gold medals, 21 silvers and 13 bronzes. Van Tonder added that the team competed against competitors from USA, Portugal and Australia and truly left a footprint at the expo.
He added, “Big congratulations to each and every individual who played a role in getting the team to this point and taking them through their journey. It was a massive undertaking but a proud one.”
