Xaba seeks to defend CityRun title

JOHANNESBURG – The FNB Joburg 10K CityRun title holder Glenrose Xaba is optimistic for the big competition.

As participants all over Johannesburg get ready for the FNB Joburg 10K CityRun, a returning champion is working hard to hold onto her title on 24 September.

Glenrose Xaba has had a tremendous 2018 season, started by clocking a massive personal best over 10 000m at the Gauteng North Provincial Championships on 24 February in a time of 32:59:05. Only three South Africans have ever gone faster of the track, Elana van Zyl Meyer in 30:52:51, Colleen de Reuck in 31:56:00 and Dominique Scott in 31:51:47.

Xaba said that she was quite surprised by her sub 33 times, but also surprised by the good shape she feels she’s in. “The time showed me that I could run really well over the 10km this year, which is my focus.”

She will be defending her title at the SA 10km Cross Country Championship in Port Elizabeth on 8 September before heading to Johannesburg to defend her FNB Joburg 10K CityRun.

The 24-year-old said that she would be also targeting a 10km personal best at the FNB Durban 10K CitySurfRun on 14 October. “I know that course is fast and flat and there will be good competition, so I want to run my best there. It will also be the last race of the season for me.

“But I do want to defend my title in Joburg. It was that race that started my solid running streak, so defending the title is important to me.”
