Skier in Roedean’s midst

PARKTOWN – A young skiing sensation of Roedean School SA has taken her skills to a higher level as she flew overseas to represent SA.

Making the best of a sport while staying in a country which is not exactly conducive to that sport is a commendable achievement.

This is what Roedean School SA learner, Zoya Mothupi-Sarges has done with her love of skiing since the age of three.

Zoya was recently selected as the only local learner to represent South Africa in the International Children’s Ski championships. She and her father flew to the venue in Ordino, a town in the independent principality of Andorra which is near Spain. There were about 400 racers from U14 and U16 age groups from 27 countries and Zoya participated in the U16 category.

The young skier placed 36 out of 48 in the giant slalom and 35 out of 47 in the slalom skiing disciplines. Looking back on the journey leading to Zoya being chosen to represent her country, she said, “Since I started skiing at school, I have participated in about five championships winning gold medals and certificates. So far I have eight medals.”

She said her journey to Andorra gave her a wider perspective of the world as she also made friends with a group of skiers from the Czech Republic. Back home Zoya said she would be spending more time in the mountains as she works on her ‘trick skiing’ skills.

“It’s a really amazing feeling to do something considered ‘weird’ while looking down from the mountain tops with the wind in your face. “The rare opportunity to represent my country was also an achievement I appreciate.”

Roedean School extended their appreciation to Zoya’s coach, Alex Heath and ex-Olympic ski racer and head of Snow Sports SA, Peter Pils.
