‘Servants’ of Alex Northrand football dethroned

ALEXANDRA -– Alex football has a new team of executive committee members in charge of the day-to-day running of the affairs of township football.

The Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association (ANLFA) has a new executive committee that now runs all the affairs of football in the township.

This follows the ousting of the previous committee that had a long stand-off with its chairperson, Maisha Molepo, resulting in the paralysis of the running of football in the iconic township.

The old committee led by the long-standing servant of Alex football and former secretary general Mafika Morajane, along with the two deputy chairpersons Lusanda Jika and Velly Lekanyane and treasurer Lazarus Matloga of Laz FC, were relieved of their responsibilities on 3 September. This followed a meeting of the clubs three days before the announcement at a meeting which the expelled executive had been invited to but never attended.

The decision to fire the old executive, who had hardly completed three years in office after being elected in 2017, comes after an intervention by the South African Football Association (Safa) Joburg Region following a request by Molepo who is also one of the two deputy chairpersons of Safa Joburg Region.

Asked about the nature of the dispute, Molepo said it related to the books and financial state of the ANLFA. Molepo said he had constantly asked for the finances of the association to be made public to the clubs and that the books be properly audited.

“I want to believe this is what led to a collision course between me and the executive committee, as I never kept quiet. Each time we had a meeting with chairpersons of the club, I would raise the issue and never got a satisfactory answer,” he claimed.

The chairperson of the Safa Joburg Region, Phil Mogodi was invited to intervene in the stand-off and he held various meetings with both warring factions of the ANLFA board, and the clubs.

The clubs are said to have held their own meeting afterwards at which a decision to expel the old board was taken. The old board members were replaced by Bluebirds Ladies coach Malvin Khumalo as the new secretary general, Joe Seanego, Norwood Young Stars founder and chairperson Venita Masisi as deputy chairperson while the new treasurer is now one of the top coaching brains of Alex football, Mxolisi Mngomezulu.

Mngomezulu is a former technical director of the ANLFA, who once stood for election against incumbent chairperson Molepo. Mngomezulu was subsequently fired and spent a couple of years in the wilderness and only performed coaching duties for various clubs before being briefly snapped up by Orlando Pirates to assist as a member of the technical staff.

When contacted for comment, former secretary general, Morajane declined to make any statement on the board members dismissal. “We will comment later,” he said.
