Ort SA hosts successful golf day
KILLARNEY – The scorching sun didn't deter the supportive golfers who played to raise funds towards Ort SA projects.
Golfers were happy to show their support by attending the Ort SA Golf Classic at the Killarney Country Club. According to the Ort SA Golf Committee chairman Solly Burgin, this was the 46th year of the event. He said Ort is a worldwide institution whose aim is, as the words of its motto, Education for Life.
“The golf day raises money for a number of Ort projects which include teaching children in the townships who are three to four years old numeracy and literacy. The proceeds from the golf classic will then go towards these projects to enhance education and make young people more employable,” Burgin said.
Marketing and communications manager at Ort SA, Marcelle Ravid extended her gratitude to the organisers of the event Debbie Lourie, Rosemary Green, Helene Itzkin as well as many other volunteers, supporters and funders. She also thanked some of the golfers who played for Ort for 30 years.

She highlighted a lot of projects implemented through the year that had been successful including the Yes project (Youth Employment Services) which saw 47 per cent absorption meaning 47 per cent of those enrolled in the project got employed.
“Whatever programme we enrol the youth in, we don’t just let them go, we follow up and check how they are progressing. We always try to find a place of work near where they live so they don’t have to spend too much on travel,” Ravid said.

She added that there is a lot more planned for next year as Ort turns 140 and just next week some of the children would showcase an invention in the form of a device which detects floods.
