Jozi Stars still to shine in Mzansi Super League

ILLOVO – Jozi Stars are sure to strike back in the Mzansi Super League.

Reigning Mzansi Super League champions, the Jozi Stars have it all to do after losing their first three matches this tournament.

The outfit based at the Imperial Wanderers Stadium, Illovo, were recipients of numerous awards last year after they won the T20 title under former coach Enoch Nkwe, who is now interim team director for the Proteas.

The Star’s newly appointed coach, Donovan Miller, said there would not be much pressure on the team as long as they kept to their game plans.

But lying at the bottom of the table, Joburg’s best cricketers will feel the need to live up to expectations fans have placed on them.

Jozi Stars lost to last year’s runner’s up, Cape Town Blitz, in the league opener that saw a whopping 411 runs scored. They then proceeded to lose to Nelson Mandela Bay Giants and then Cape Town Blitz again.

On the batting front, Temba Bavuma and Reeza Hendricks are in fine form but the other experienced batsmen need to up their game. Names like Chris Gayle, Rassie van der Dussen and Dan Christian are synonymous with big-hitting in the shorter format and much should be expected from them.

Likewise, the side’s bowling line-up is star-studded. The world’s number two Test bowler, Kagiso Rabada, is joined by the likes of Duanne Olivier, Simon Harmer, Dane Paterson and Nono Pongolo.

It is an attack that only the best batsmen should be able to score off, and no team should be able to score more than 200 runs against these bowlers, which Cape Town Blitz did in the first game.

The Stars next play at home was against Nelson Mandela Bay Giants on 16 November, and will then only play at the ‘Bull Ring’ again on 24 November against Tshwane Spartans.

Their next home games are on 1 and 7 December. The community is encouraged to get behind their local cricket franchise as they undoubtedly will come back in the Mzansi Super League.
