Local paddlers train for the Dusi

ROSEBANK – The pair won podium position for the first mixed double at the FLCC Dusi Training River Race.

Nkosi Mzolo, a fireman at the Rosebank Fire Department, teamed up with Parktown High School for Girls learner Tinyiko Mahwayi to compete in the FLCC Dusi Training River Race on 1 December.

The 30km river race with a 3km portage journeyed from Daleside to Meyerton and was hosted by Florida Lake Canoe Club.

Despite the challenging race, Mzolo and Tinyiko won the podium position for first mixed double (male/female combination).

The portage is an essential part of Dusi training as paddlers have to get out of the river and run with their boat for up to 18km. The Dusi is one of the world’s toughest canoeing endurance events. The practice event provided the perfect opportunity for paddlers to speedily and efficiently get out of their boat, pick it up, run with it for a distance, climb up or down a riverbank with it and put it back into the river to continue paddling through the currents, white water and rapids.

Tinyiko recently returned from Slovakia where she competed in the Youth Olympic Hopefuls training event which improved her paddling significantly. She thoroughly enjoyed the river race with Mzolo who is also her coach.
